According to a recent study that was published in Nature Geoscience, the melting ice could cause a rise in sea level of more than 11 feet globally over the following several centuries.

However, their present pace of melting is quickening and boosting the global sea level, according to coauthor Dylan Rood from Imperial College London. “Our analysis implies that these susceptible glaciers were reasonably stable over the last millennia,” he says in a statement.

“These currently elevated rates of ice melting may signal that those vital arteries from the heart of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) have ruptured, resulting in an accelerating flow into the ocean that is potentially disastrous for future global sea level in a warming world,” according to the study.

The Thwaites Glacier, known as the “Doomsday Glacier” because of the potentially catastrophic effects if it melts, and the nearby Pine Island Glacier, both of which are vulnerable to melting from warm water running underneath them, were both investigated by scientists.

According to the release, the researchers used radiocarbon dating to reconstruct changes in sea level relative to the coast over 5,000 years by examining penguin bones and seashells from old Antarctic beaches.

In order to understand how glaciers retreated and advanced, scientists also looked at how the height of the land changed as a result of shifting loads of ice. Both larger, heavier glaciers and lighter glaciers have the potential to cause land to rise and sea level relative to the coast to fall, as well as land to sink and sea level relative to the coast to rise.

The scientists discovered that the pace of decline in sea level in relation to the shoreline from roughly 5,000 years ago until 30 years ago was compatible with stable glacial behavior. According to the study, the rapid loss of glacial ice that caused the earth to rise was probably the reason why the relative sea level fall over the past thirty years was almost five times lower.

In addition, no topographic characteristics will assist stabilise the glacier where it is because it is resting on a slope with no recognized highs, which could induce uncontrolled melting.

Scientists issued a warning last year that the vast Thwaites Glacier, which is the size of Florida, might see an ice shelf collapse in the next three to five years. About 4% of the annual overall rise in sea level is already attributable to glacier melting.

We’re pushing on the climate extremely quickly with carbon dioxide emissions, said Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, to Science News’ Carolyn Gramling last year. “We’re watching a world that’s doing things we haven’t really seen before,” he added. “It’s daunting.”
